Barbour International & Steve McQueen8th July 2025 by B.Burrows With their roots firmly centred in the north east, Barbour's image remains closely tied to the British countryside and its influence on their illustrious design history; elements of which have since become tradition for the brand and are represented with each new collection. However, since the early 20th century the brand has also become known for its links to motorsport - more specifically, off-road motorcycling. Barbour International Steve McQueen Workers Wax Jacket In 1936, Duncan Barbour's interest in motorcycles and the upcoming International Six Days Trial (ISDT) led to the development of a one-piece, waxed cotton suit called the "International" specifically for the event. Its functionality and durability saw it quickly surge in popularity amongst fellow competitors and didn't go unnoticed by the general population - the Barbour name grew as the brand was to produce standard issue oilskin suits for elements of the British military throughout the Second World War. By the time the ISDT returned in the 1950s, the vast majority of participating riders (estimates are as high as 97%) were wearing Internationals. The brand would be catapulted in terms of recognition and popularity as the 1964 ISDT saw Steve McQueen lead the very first American team to enter the event wearing an International himself, a link that has lasted even until today and has led to the introduction of a separate Steve McQueen collection from Barbour International (now a standalone label itself). Consisting of garments inspired by archive images and videos of the man himself, along with those heavily influenced by vintage Americana and Military clothing, the collection grows from strength to strength each season.
