Linen: A Must Have This Summer

    9th May 2025 by B.Burrows

While there is evidence of the fabric being in use for over 30,000 years, linen has experienced a recent resurgence in the fashion industry with brands and designers rediscovering its wide range of benefits. Easily grown in temperate climates with minimal irrigation or use of polluting pesticides, fungicides and herbicides, the production process of the Flax from which linen is made is more sustainable than that of cotton and a variety of other fibres more commonly used in fashion, thus reducing cost and environmental impact.

The fabric itself provides similar benefits; increased durability means that the garments made from it need to be replaced less often. linen also has antibacterial and absorbent properties, reducing the need for washing and, in turn, reducing environmental harm even further. Its natural uneven appearance has begun to curry favour with prominent designers around the world, particularly when it comes to summer collections -  linen is naturally breathable, moisture-wicking and quick-drying, creating the ideal choice for relaxed looks in hotter conditions.

One brand that has taken advantage is BOSS, with their most recent collection featuring a large number of linen items throughout. The "Lapoully Linen Shirt" takes a slightly more relaxed approach to a classic smart-casual style from the brand, combining breathability and comfort with a versatile look that's easily paired with most outfits. The brand's "Kane Linen Shorts" further emphasise these qualities, with a comfortable and relaxed construction that's disguised beneath their classic, slightly formal appearance.

Polo Ralph Lauren have also made linen a staple of their latest collection for the summer ahead. A "Tropical Print Linen Shirt" seizes the attention immediately; a classic, relaxed choice for the warmer weather ahead with a bold allover print that's great for your holidays this year. Their "Linen Prepster Short" also makes a return to the new collection, refreshing a classic look for the summer with the use of a durable fabric that's breathable, comfortable and relaxed for the warmer weather.
