The Lacoste L1212 Polo Shirt

18th February 2014 | Posted in Menswear

Using it’s now infamous crocodile logo, Lacoste have been forging their reputation as one of the world’s most iconic brands since 1933. Famed with the introduction of the polo shirt into mainstream fashion, the French label has used their snappy branding to become synonymous with the pique cotton classic shirt with the collar, dual button placket and ribbed sleeve.

Developing from humble beginnings that started out on the tennis courts of the international circuit with former French tennis star Rene Lacoste, the Lacoste label found its feet by introducing the polo shirt into on court style, helping to dispense with the classic dress shirts that were being worn by players at the time.

Rene created quite a stir when he first stepped out on court in his revolutionary polo shirt. Made from a light weight and breathable pique cotton, he turned the collar up to shield his neck from the rays of the sun. The style stuck amongst the pro tennis players at the time, and, following retirement, Rene took his revolutionary design to the fashion market with the launch of his self titled brand- using the crocodile logo, inspired by the name that he had picked up for himself as a tennis player, to make his polo shirts instantly recognisable.

The years that followed spelt success for the small French label. Growing year on year, Lacoste developed an entire ready to wear range, branching out from polo shirts, whilst still keeping all the originality and quality that the brand had become known for.

Everyone from casuals to prepsters wore Lacoste- it’s simple and elegant style which carried strong European style values managed to transcend not just through fashion movements, but also through generations.

This season sees Lacoste return with an eclectic range of their iconic L.12.12 polo shirt. The original style released by Rene Lacoste, the L.12.12 is the daddy of polo's, being the one and only true pioneer of the style. Having been tweaked and altered down the years, the L.12.12 offers a modern cut with a material that is just as comfortable and hard wearing as the one that Rene wore all those years ago.

Coming from Lacoste’s spring/summer 2014 collection, you can expect to see a return from the labels famed pastel colour ways. Tonal hews of greens, blues and yellows offer a classic and timeless summer look that is poised to sit perfectly with the rest of your warm weather wardrobe.

Along with the classic colour options of black, white, and navy, this year’s Lacoste L.12.12 polo collection looks like one of the strongest to date.
